The 25-year-old was up against the then 7-2 Maverick but the fight was called off after Jojua suffered a deep and nasty cut to the nose.

Jojua caught an elbow from Maverick in the first round and the damage could be seen straight away. However, Jojua battled on and the doctors started working on her later on.

Fighting spirit of Jojua shines

The doctors were still working on her but the decision was made at the end of the first round. Jojua got up right after hearing the decision and did not want the fight to be stopped.

She wasn’t knocked out or submitted, but such a loss hurts more than others. A second video showed the real damage done by the elbow and it was a very deep cut that Jojua suffered in the fight.

Maverick certainly enjoyed the win and celebrated in the Octagon. The 23-year-old American moved to 8-2 in her MMA career and this was her debut fight in the UFC.

Maverick is on a four-fight win streak now and it will be interesting to see how she does in her next fight.

Jojua, for her part, might need to take some time off to deal with the brutal nose injury. She is still young and Fight Island must have been a great experience, but it was unfortunate that she lost the fight in this manner.

Dana White added that the injury wasn’t serious and she hadn’t broken her nose. However, Jojua needed some stitches to stop the bleeding.

Jojua also posted an image after the fight and her translated post claimed she wanted to continue but it wasn’t her day.
