Conor McGregor had his left ankle snapped in the very first round of his fight against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264
UFC 264 had one of the most anti-climactic ends to a fight. The main event saw Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier fight it out in a match that overflowed with bad blood.
After trading a barrage of strikes the fight went to the ground. Poirier showed his wrestling experience and class, sparking McGregor with several ground strikes and elbows.
Right before the bell, once both the fighters got back to their feet, McGregor snapped his left ankle as he awkwardly landed during his stance.
The bell for the end of the first round went off, and referee Herb Dean waved off the fight after officials and the Octagon doctor deemed McGregor ‘unable to continue’.
Poirier won the fight, via. TKO (due to a doctor stoppage).
McGregor was then plastered around his ankle, even as he rested alongside the Octagon cage.
His old foe Rafael dos Anjos took a dig at McGregor by mocking his injury calling it a bruise.
He further tweeted:
“When I BROKE my foot before our fight this guy made fun of my injury…and continued to do so for years. Taste your own medicine and humble up.”
McGregor was supposed to fight Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196, back in 2016. It was a lightweight title bout.
However, just a week before the fight, RDA pulled out due to a broken toe. McGregor mocked RDA for being soft and pulling out for a broken toe. The ‘Irishman’ had also called it a bruise, enraging RDA in the process.
The fight never took place.
And now, on seeing McGregor being faced with a similar problem, RDA saw it as the right time to step in and tear into his enemy.
