Colby Covington was not impressed by Jorge Masvidal not accepting his fight
Colby Covington is never afraid to cause a storm when he is on the microphone or well, even on social media.
Covington, who seems to be Donald Trump’s favourite fighter, ripped into Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal after recent events.
Usman defeated Gilbert Burns at UFC 258 and called out Masvidal. The Nigerian Nightmare is willing to put his title on the line in a rematch against Masvidal, and this time, he is willing to give Gamebred a proper training camp.
Masvidal also believes he can get the better of Usman. However, Covington has been left in the lurch with these events.
Covington was on Submission Radio and explained why his fight with Masvidal didn’t happen. The pair were rumoured to meet after Covington defeated Tyron Woodley but it was Masvidal that seemed to back out:
“In my words, which is the truth, you know, and Dana White and everybody at the UFC can attest to that, he is just scared of me.
“I mean he’s afraid, you know, he’s embarrassed, he doesn’t want to get embarrassed in front of the whole world, you know.
“He knows how this match up goes. He would be willing to lose to anybody else but me, you know.
“The UFC offered him a seven-figure payday, an Ultimate Fighter gig, this heated rivalry.
“The only reason I wanted to fight Jorge ‘Street Judas’ Masvidal, we got a vendetta, and it needs to be settled.”
Colby Covington wants Kamaru Usman if not Jorge Masvidal
Covington also confirmed why he wanted to take on Masvidal and if he wouldn’t get Gamebred, Usman was his target:
“It’s an easy payday for me, I was willing to go back but it’s because he was running his mouth. He was saying I was fragile, he said he was going to knock me out, baptize me like close people to me saying let’s fight in the parking lot at our gold gym, trying to act tough in events in front of Dana like
‘Hey I’ll beat Colby’s a**’.
“That’s why I was willing to go backwards because there’s a legitimate personal beef there. This is deeper than just a fight you know, it’s just this is a broken friendship, a complete rivalry now.
“But what can I do about it? He doesn’t want to fight, he is scared to fight. He knows what would happen if we fight so I got to move, I got bigger business to take care of.
“I don’t need to go back in the rankings any ways, I am the No.1 Welterweight in the world and frankly, I deserve my title shot.”
Usman and Covington met in the past and it was The Nigerian Nightmare that got the win in the end.
However, Covington believed that the referee helped Usman out with some stoppages.
Covington also revealed that he had signed a deal to fight Masvidal after the Woodley fight but the ‘journeyman’ didn’t accept the fight which was set up for December 2020 or January 2021.
