Sean O’Malley always looks up to ‘The Face of the Fight Game’ Conor McGregor

Sean O’Malley returns to action this weekend at UFC 264. He is set to take on Kris Moutinho in a fight that kicks off the main card.

Just a couple of weeks ago it looked like O’Malley’s fight might be pulled out of the UFC 264 card, after his opponent Louis Smolka withdrew from the fight due to an undisclosed infection.

Moutinho stepped in on short notice, amidst a legion of interest from other fighters, even a few top-ranked ones.

O’Malley kicks off the main card that is headlined by someone he looks up to – Conor McGregor.

In the recent episode of the Schmozone podcast, O’Malley revealed that he has learnt a lot from McGregor.

‘Sugar’ told Helen Yee and the Schmo:

“I have learnt a lot from Conor…How he handles pressure, I think I naturally did a lot of those things good. But he’s definetely helped me improve in those areas.”

Sean O’Malley reveals his David Nuzzo knockout was inspired by Conor McGregor

Prior to joining the UFC, O’Malley was in the Legacy Fighting Alliance. At LFA 11 in May 2017, he took on David Nuzzo and beat him via. a spinning hook kick knockout in the very first round.

O’Malley credited McGregor for his unique knockout of Nuzzo. He revealed that he had watched McGregor do something similar, and hence wanted to execute the same.

O’Malley said:

“I remember after that David Nuzzo knockout. The reason I kinda learnt that spin this way, spin the opposite way (finish) is I’ve seen Conor do it. He did it differently, he did it like a teep and then spun the other way…That got in my mind…I was like, ‘Oh, that’s f*cking sweet.’ And then I’ll go out there and knockout David Nuzzo with a right head kick to a spinning back kick. That was from watching Conor.”
