Sean O’Malley might have his fight at UFC 264 entirely cancelled
UFC 264 recently lost a fight from its main card. The bantamweight fight between Sean O’Malley was cancelled after Louis Smolka pulled out due to an undisclosed injury.
The news was first reported by Ariel Helwani. He mentioned that the UFC however were planning to keep O’Malley in the card, but haven’t found an opponent yet. The event is headlined by the trilogy fight between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier.
O’Malley was coming off a victory against Thomas Almeida at UFC 260. With that loss, he buried the ghosts of his defeat against Marlon Vera at UFC 252. That loss to Vera, was Sugar Sean’s first-ever defeat in his MMA career.
Helwani’s tweet read:
“Louis Smolka is out of next weekend’s UFC 264 fight versus Sean O’Malley, sources say. Undisclosed injury. They were scheduled to be on the PPV main card. UFC is hoping to keep O’Malley on the card, I’m told, but no new opponent locked in yet.“
Giga Chikadze, Tim Elliott and others willing to step in place of Louis Smolka
Following the announcement of Smolka pulling out several fighters volunteered to step in to face Sean O’Malley.
Up and coming UFC featherweight Giga Chikadze quickly tweeted: “I’m always game.”
Number 10 ranked UFC flyweight Tim Elliott was ready as well. He tweeted, “I’ll take that! My opponent was injured!”
Georgian and number 10 ranked UFC bantamweight Merab Dvalishvili was ready to step in and fight O’Malley and then take on Marlon Vera in September as well.
Ricky Simon was ready to accept the fight in less than 2 weeks.
Ray Borg who was recently released by the UFC, threw his name into the mix, as well.
