Stephen Thompson is scheduled to face former teammate of Kamaru Usman, Gilbert Burns at UFC 264
If there is one top-ranked welterweight that Kamaru Usman hasn’t faced in the UFC, it has to be Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson.
The Karate master, known for his unique style of fighting, has always been named as a tough match up for Usman. His kicks and striking are second to none in the welterweight division.
In the wake of this, Thompson said in a chat with James Lynch that, he would prove to be a massive threat for Usman.
Wonderboy also claimed that it would be difficult for Usman to find someone similar like him (Thompson), in order to prepare for him:
“I think it is a great matchup for me…I think it’s very difficult for him to find somebody like me, to prepare forward for me. So he’s the one that’s got to word extra hard to prepare…It’s looking good for sure. I gotta go out there and beat Burns first.”
Wonderboy is currently ranked number number 4 in the welterweight division. He is coming off a victory against Geoff Neal, in December last year.
Thompson returns to action this July. He will be facing number 2 ranked welterweight Gilbert Burns at UFC 264.
Burns, is coming off a loss against his former teammate and sparring partner Usman at UFC 258. A win here might probably earn him a title shot, or a number one contender fight against Colby Covington.
The same goes with Thompson as well. However, given that Burns only recently lost to Usman, Thompson has a better chance of fighting Usman for the title straight away.
First things first, he will be looking forward to seeing off ‘Durinho’, come the 10th of July.
