Khabib Nurmagomedov was reminded by Tony Ferguson of his weight cut debacle at UFC 209
UFC lightweight fighter Tony Ferguson holds on prisoners, whether it’s inside the octagon or on social media.
This week, he shared a video making fun of UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov for his love of junk food and reminded him of his UFC 209 weight cut incident.
The PPV had ‘El Cucuy’ pitted against ‘The Eagle’, but Nurmagomedov had to pull out of the fight due to a botched weight cut.
Ferguson hit the scales earlier and weighed in at 154.5 pounds. The Russian, however, suffered a medical emergency in his efforts to make weight for the fight.
He had to be rushed to a hospital, and the fight was called off as a result. This was the third time the promotion wanted to pit both of them against each other, but it was not to happen.
The fight was again scheduled for UFC 249, but Covid-19 regulations meant that the Russian was again unable to show up to the fight.
As fate would have it, the two never met each other in the UFC before Nurmagomedov announced his retirement after UFC 254.
It’s a shame that we did not get to see that fight. Nurmagomedov’s next fight after the incident was against Edson Barboza at UFC 219.
He won that with ease, as was the case with his next 4 fights. Ferguson, on the other hand, had a mixed run of fights after that.
He won his next 3 fights in succession, but has since suffered back-to-back defeats. His most recent fight, which came at UFC 256, ended in a defeat via unanimous decision against Charles Oliveira.
