Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards is probably one step away from a title fight
Edwards will be welcoming the returning Nate Diaz when the pair face-off at UFC 263. Their fight will be the first non-title fight in the history of the UFC that will be a 5-rounder. The very presence of Diaz is the reason for the same.
Edwards, meanwhile, will be looking forward to continuing his impressive win streak of 8 wins. The Brit hasn’t lost since his loss to Kamaru Usman in December 2015. That is an impressive 6 years!
‘Rocky‘, in fact, has been overlooked very often. He hasn’t featured in high-profile fights despite never failing to put on a show inside the Octagon.
Edwards’ last three wins have come against Gunnar Nelson, Donald Cerrone and Rafael dos Anjos. He is currently ranked number 3 in the welterweight division.
In a recent interview with the Schmo, Edwards was asked how he felt when he learned that he was facing the OG – Nate Diaz.
Edwards replied:
“Excitement, you know. Like you said, he is the OG in the game, big draw in the game. So for me to go out there now and put him away- they’ll put me right in line for the title shot that I long deserve. So that’s what is my focus right now- to go out there and take him out.”
Dana White feels Colby Covington is next in line for the title shot
A win for Edwards might fetch him a title shot. But, the presence of number 1 ranked welterweight contender Colby Covington, who hasn’t fought in almost a year, might delay his chance to get a title shot.
In a recent interview with Submission Radio, UFC President Dana White revealed that it would be Covington fighting for the title next, followed by the winner of Leon Edwards vs Nate Diaz.
“Colby [Covington] is the number one contender…It’s the fight to make…Whoever wins [between Diaz and Edwards] is next after Colby.”
