Tyron Woodley backs Jorge Masvidal to defeat Kamaru Usman at UFC 261

Number 10 ranked welterweight Tyron Woodley believes Jorge Masvidal can pull off a victory against Kamaru Usman at UFC 261.

The world is on tenterhooks, as Kamaru Usman will be defending his welterweight title for the second time against Jorge Masvidal in the main event of UFC 261. The pair last met at UFC 251, which saw the Nigerian Nightmare breeze past Gamebred via. unanimous decision.

Usman will be looking forward to a 14th successful title defense. He already went past Georges St-Pierre’s record of 12 consecutive wins in the welterweight division, when he beat former teammate Gilbert Burns at UFC 258.

With no defeats in the UFC, it is hard to bet against the Nigerian. However, fellow UFC Welterweight Tyron Woodley, who lost his welterweight title at the hands of Usman at UFC 235, thinks Masvidal can pull off a victory against the Nigerian Nightmare.

Speaking in an interview with Ariel Helwani of ESPN MMA, Woodley revealed that he was backing Masvidal to come up trumps in this high-voltage clash.

Comparing Masvidal’s run in the division to Robbie Lawler’s, Woodley claimed that Gamebred can recreate something similar to what Lawler did in his heydays.

Woodley said:

“I am shooting for Masvidal. He got the BMF belt…I want to support him. I want to wish him well. He has a great chance of winning this fight. The striking, the boxing and the ability to stop the takedown, has always been there.”

What next for Tyron Woodley after Vicente Luque loss

Woodley last fought just last month, against Vicente Luque in the co-main event of UFC 260. Having rocked Luque early in the fight, Woodley failed to capitalize on a brilliant start, as Luque won by submission (brabo choke) in the next couple of minutes.

The loss was Woodley’s fourth straight loss in the UFC, and it many, in fact he himself might be facing a Catch-22 situation right now, as to what is next for him?
