The future of Conor McGregor might be at stake should he lose the fight at UFC 264

McGregor will be taking on Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 264. This will be the pair’s third fight in the UFC.

Poirier recently made it 1-1 in the rivalry after he shut the lights out on McGregor with some devastating strikes at UFC 257.

McGregor had won the first fight at UFC 178, back in September 2014 – The day ‘Mystic Mac’ was born.

Following his loss at UFC 257, a trilogy bout was immediately agreed upon and was soon made official. McGregor will be fighting in front of a full house in Vegas this time, a welcome change for a man who thrives in front of a bustling crowd.

UFC President Dana White opened up on McGregor’s future, in case he loses the fight to Poirier.

In an interview with Brett Okamoto of ESPN, White seemed pretty unsure about the Irishman’s future and stressed upon asking the question once he is done with the trilogy bout.

White said:

“I have no clue. You have to see how the fights play out first…You gotta ask me that question after that fight happens.”

Conor McGregor hints at a possible move to the welterweight division

McGregor has already fought thrice in the welterweight division. He made his 170lbs debut against Nate Diaz at UFC 196 in March 2016. McGregor lost the match via. submission.

He then claimed victory in the rematch against Diaz, which was of course, a welterweight bout. After almost 4 years, he then returned to the welterweight division, beating Donald Cerrone at UFC 246.

A record of 2-1 isn’t that bad, and McGregor himself has often revealed that he felt comfortable at 170lbs. He usually walks around at 170 as well.

In a recent Q&A session with fans on Twitter, McGregor spoke about his intentions of moving up again to the welterweight division.

He revealed:

“Yes. I’ve always liked how I looked, felt, and performed at 170. I will most certainly be going back up!”
