UFC referee Marc Goddard has had a few run-ins with Conor McGregor
Marc Goddard is one of the best referees in the business. The Brit was a fighter himself during his early days, and never backs down if the fighters take him head on inside the cage.
He plies his trade predominantly in the UFC, but can be seen occasionally in other promotions as well.
During his time at Bellator in 2017, Goddard was officiating a fight between Charlie Ward, a teammate of Conor McGregor, and John Redmond.
Following Ward’s knockout victory, McGregor who was not a registered cornerman, jumped into the cage and embraced the Irishman.
He was separated by referee Goddard, mainly due to the fact that he wasn’t a registered cornerman. An enraged McGregor then pushed Goddard violently and began confronting him.
This incident was widely talked about during those days, especially because McGregor was in the peak of his popularity.
Almost four years have passed since that incident, and McGregor is now looking ahead to a trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier on the 10th of July, at UFC 264.
In a recent Q&A on Twitter, Marc Goddard was asked if he was open to officiating a McGregor fight again.
Without hesitation, the Brit replied that he had no problems officiating a McGregor fight again. But he feared that he wouldn’t be assigned to the fight, due to the history of bad blood between him and the Irishman.
“Of course I would. There is zero problem! But in the interests of perception/ease I most probably wouldn’t be assigned to the fight, and that’s all good. I’ll be in Las Vegas in July also.”
