UFC releases heavyweight Carlos Felipe after fighter’s second doping violation

Published by

Earlier on Tuesday, the UFC had to say goodbye to one of its rising stars in Carlos Felipe as the Brazilian returned a second positive test for boldenone.

Carlos Felipe was cut from the UFC heavyweight roster on Tuesday after testing positive for an illegal substance for the second time in his career. The 27-year-old was previously handed an 18-month suspension by the UFC for a positive drug test due to the usage of boldenone.

However, rather than wait for the heavyweight fighter to return in April 2023, the UFC decided to cut ties completely. Felipe had signed with the UFC in 2019, nearly two years after the fighter was suspended by the USADA as he tested positive for metabolites of stanozolol.

His debut fight in the UFC then eventually came in 2020 against Sergey Spivak which ended in defeat for Felipe via decision. But Felipe went on to win three consecutive fights before his loss against Andrei Arlovski in his fifth fight for the promotion.

Why did UFC release Carlos Felipe from roster?

Felipe returned a positive test for boldenone after his fight against Andrei Arlovski at UFC Vegas 40 in October last year. He suffered defeat via unanimous decision after three rounds. It was the second defeat of his UFC career and second overall in his MMA record.

Following his co-main event bout, a drug test conducted by the Nevada Athletic Commission revealed that the Brazilian had used an illegal substance before his fight. He was also fined 15% of his purse, plus attorney fees. It was later revealed that the substance detected in Felip’s bloodstream was boldenone.

On Tuesday, it was confirmed that the UFC decided to part ways with Felipe by cutting short his contract. However, if Felipe des return to the MMA business, he will be able to fight professionally only after April 16th, 2023.
