Alistair Overeem survived an early onslaught to defeat Walt Harris at UFC Fight Night 176
The main event of UFC Fight Night 176 saw heavyweights Alistair Overeem and Walt Harris. It was the experienced Overeem who got the win against Harris despite suffering some heavy blows in the first round.
The Dutch MMA veteran was downed early on by Harris, and the American threw several punches at the 40-year-old.
However, Overeem survived that blitz and somehow managed to escape from Harris’ clutches. The Dutchman used all his experience to come back in the fight and he took control of the fight.
He got Harris in a tight position in the second round as he was on top and the American belly down facing the canvas.
Punches rained in on the 36-year-old and the referee had to stop the fight. Overeem showed a ton of respect for Harris after the fight, and the American carried a lot of emotions coming into the fight too.
The American came into this fight with a lot of emotional baggage. His stepdaughter was missing in late 2019 and was found killed later on.
The culprits were arrested but this would have taken a huge toll on the 36-year-old. Harris was on a two-fight winning streak before this clash, and he spoke about the result too.
He thanked the UFC for supporting him throughout his ordeal. The heavyweight star promised to come back stronger and deal with the loss too.
Overeem, for his part, showed off his MMA experience in his 65th fight. The Dutch star has 46 wins, 18 losses and one no-contest in his career.
Overeem has never won the heavyweight title in the UFC despite being a Strikeforce champion. However, he could still be in the running after this win.
