Jorge Masvidal could face Kamaru Usman for the UFC Welterweight title in a week’s time
Fate seems to have opened the door, once again, for Jorge Masvidal to battle Kamaru Usman for the UFC Welterweight title.
They were to face and almost came to blows ahead of the Super Bowl. However, that fight got cancelled with Gilbert Burns set to take on Usman at Fight Island.
Burns then tested positive for Covid-19 and the UFC is looking for a replacement with the fight set for next week.
The champion, Usman, would want to defend his title and there have been talks with Masvidal’s team to accept the fight on short notice.
Masvidal is the BMF Champion after defeating Nate Diaz, however, Gamebred spoke about possibly winning a title before retiring from MMA.
This clipping was shared by Chamatkar Sandhu as Masvidal was asked about winning a UFC championship but this was before he became one of the biggest names:
“I have to get a championship belt. If I want the kind of sleep I want at night, I have to have that belt around my waist.
“I got maybe have four years left in this sport and then this roller-coaster is over.”
Masvidal was also open in suggesting that he would only fight till his body would allow it, and wouldn’t allow “young punks” to beat him.
Before the Darren Till KO, before 3 piece and a soda, before the Ben Askren KO and before becoming the BMF this is what Jorge Masvidal (@GamebredFighter) told me when I asked him about winning a UFC championship belt. pic.twitter.com/YUZ2R05xty

Can the fight take place?
Currently, it seems unlikely that the fight can happen on short notice. The fighters would also have to travel to Abu Dhabi and with no training, Masvidal would be at a disadvantage.
However, a fight can take place later on with a couple of other events scheduled for Fight Island.
Masvidal is one of the biggest names in the promotion but he is yet to win a UFC title. Gamebred has also been upset over the pay structure in the promotion.
A clash against Usman would be one of the biggest fights of the year, and it will be interesting to see if the UFC can finalise the clash.
