Rogerio Bontorin got the win over Matt Schnell but the American lost his mouthpiece at UFC 262 and the referee missed it
Rogerio Bontorin took a shot notice fight against the rising star in Matt Schnell. Bontorin, a Brazilian, was fined 20% of his fee which was given to Schnell as he was one pound over the weight limit.
Nevertheless, the pair put on quite a show at UFC 262 but there was some controversy in the clash.
It took place in the third and final round as Bontorin tried to get the win. The Brazilian landed several blows on Schnell and it seemed the American was going to get finished.
Schnell then tried to adjust his mouthpiece but it was knocked out of his hand. Bontorin continued to pummel Schnell and the referee also completely missed this.
Referee could have stopped fight to fix mouthpiece
Fighting without a mouthpiece is extremely risky, something that Tatiana Suarez brought up.
A lot of damage could have been caused and it was a bit of a surprise how the referee missed the mouthpiece flying out for a long time.
He did pick it up later on but it was too late as the fight was in the final 30 seconds or something. Schnell did take some tough blows to his mouth without the protection but he was able to finish the clash.
The fight turned in the third round as Bontorin put on the afterburners. The Brazilian picked up an impressive fight and confirmed that he could have done more if he didn’t have trouble with his weight cut.
Bontorin confirmed that this was the first time something like this had happened to him. Nevertheless, this is a huge win for Bontorin and it will be interesting to see what is next for him.
