“We all overthought it” – Chael Sonnen agrees on Ali Abdelaziz’s simple plan for GSP vs Khabib

Ali Abdelaziz recently spoke about the possibility of Khabib Nurmagomedov facing Georges St-Pierre

Chael Sonnen was speaking about the possibility of Khabib Nurmagomedov facing off against Georges St-Pierre (GSP).

GSP is one of the greatest MMA stars ever and there have been talks of a second return to the Octagon for one more fight.

The challenger also seems to be Khabib with the Russian unbeaten in his career. Sonnen claimed that GSP wants to fight him and it isn’t going away:

“This seems like the one that won’t go away, for good reason. People would like to see George one more time.

“Georges also put his foot down and said I will only do one more if its against Khabib.”

However, getting the pair to fight won’t be easy. The talks have been going on for two years but Ali Abdelaziz, the manager of Khabib made things simple recently.

He claimed three things could get the fight done, and Sonnen agreed that the best things in life are often the easiest:

“We all overthought it. It’s exactly what Ali said. Call him, call Dana, make weight”.

Khabib vs GSP would be incredible

If given time, GSP could make weight and the former UFC champ left the promotion on a high by winning his last fight.

However, Abdelaziz also spoke about GSP not needing to risk his legacy for this fight. Khabib has been incredible in the UFC and GSP taking him on now could end up being a bad move.

Further, St-Pierre has been away from the Octagon for a while and Khabib currently has a lot of bigger fish to fry.

Abdelaziz added that he “loved” GSP and didn’t want to disrespect him either. The manager went on to say that St-Pierre was the greatest UFC fighter of all time, and it is unlikely such a fight could happen anytime soon.

Khabib for his part is the UFC Lightweight Champion but he is stuck in Russia due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He was to face Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 and defend his crown. However, that fight is now Justin Gaethje vs Ferguson with an interim title for the winner.
