Kamaru Usman dominated Jorge Masvidal in their Welterweight title clash at UFC 251
One of the most anticipated clashes in UFC history saw Kamaru Usman defeat Jorge Masvidal at UFC 251.
This clash was set up at the last minute after Gilbert Burns tested positive for Covid-19. However, the Welterweight champion Usman still needed a rival and Masvidal stepped up.
The pair had a huge rivalry before this clash and were to meet but Burns came out of nowhere. The fight was expected to be a slobber knocker, however, Usman totally dominated Masvidal but not with strikes.
The Nigerian Nightmare kept Masvidal in check by using the clinch and the cage to his advantage. Usman also kept on hitting Masvidal’s toes with his feet and that was a tactic that many called him out for.
However, the champion kept his title and Jon Jones had his say about the tactic too. The Light Heavyweight champion recently claimed he was vacating the title and wasn’t keen on fighting in the UFC.
His last clash saw Dominick Reyes lose out on the title but the challenger hit out at Jones comparing himself to Usman:
Jones wanted to fight Francis Ngannou in the heavyweight division but that couldn’t take place due to financial problems.
The UFC couldn’t finalise a deal for this and it will be interesting to see what Jones has planned next.
Reyes has stated that he was ready for a rematch against Jones right after the first clash. However, it seems that Jones is the one who doesn’t want to fight Reyes.
It will be interesting to see when Jones returns to the Octagon but the Masvidal and Usman story seems to be done for now.
However, Masvidal can bring up the fact that he took the fight with six-days notice. A full training camp could have helped Gamebred a lot but Usman deserved to keep the belt after his game plan worked.
