Three names top the list of most submission wins in the welterweight division in the UFC
Submissions give a different dimension to MMA, making the sport more than just punches, kicks and knockouts.
There are a ton of fighters who have made grappling and ground-game their strong points due to their strong background in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
A lot of submission artists have come and gone in the UFC, but only a few have managed to stand out in the promotion. The list for the most submissions in the history of the UFC is dominated by Brazilians, and of course it is not a big surprise at all.
Charles Oliveira, the current lightweight champion from Brazil tops the list for the most submission wins in the UFC. He has 14 submission wins, split across the featherweight and the lightweight division.
The question here is- Who has the most submission wins in the welterweight division in the UFC?
The record is shared by three fighters- Gunnar Nelson, Chris Lytle and Demian Maia who faces Belal Muhammad this week.
While Lytle has retired, Nelson and Maia are active UFC fighters. However, the spotlight is currently on Maia, the 43-year old who is still going strong in the UFC.
Demian Maia also tops the list for the most submissions in the middleweight division as well
Maia has been a part of the UFC since UFC 77 (2007). And 14 years later, he still is in relevance, ranked number 9 in the welterweight division.
The Brazilian also tops the list for most submission wins in the middleweight division of the UFC. A record he shares with three other Brazilian fighters and Gerald Meerschaert of the USA.
Maia recently stated that he might possibly fight one more time after he is done with the Muhammad fight at UFC 263.
