Why did Sean Brady pull out of his fight against Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 290?

Sean Brady has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled bout against Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 290 due to an injury. This news has disappointed many fans who were eagerly anticipating the fight, but Brady took to Instagram to provide an update on his withdrawal and express his disappointment with Della Maddalena’s reaction.

Brady explained that he noticed a small blister on his left elbow after a training session on Monday night. However, the blister quickly worsened, resulting in swelling and pain. He revealed that he had previously suffered from a serious staph infection in 2021, which required surgery and four weeks of IV antibiotics. Brady had also withdrawn from a fight with Kevin Lee in August 2021 due to a foot infection.

Concerned about the worsening condition of his arm, Brady’s wife, who is a nurse, advised him to go to the hospital on Tuesday morning. They initially expected him to receive one dose of IV antibiotics and then continue with his training camp and travel to Vegas for the fight. Unfortunately, Brady’s arm continued to swell, and the antibiotics did not have the desired effect. He underwent a draining procedure on his elbow twice, and cultures were sent to determine the appropriate antibiotic course.

By Thursday, it was determined that Brady had a strep pyogenes group growing in his left elbow, which had spread to his bursa, causing septic bursitis. Bursitis is the inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion joints, and it is a common occurrence in a martial arts environment due to injuries or overuse.

Discharged from the hospital, Brady was still experiencing some swelling, but the doctor advised him that he was in no condition to fight and needed time to heal. This news devastated Brady, as he had dedicated himself to the sport and the training camp. He had even sacrificed going on a honeymoon with his wife and spent money that could not be recovered. However, he remains determined to return stronger than ever.

In his Instagram post, Brady also addressed a comment made by Della Maddalena on the social media platform. Della Maddalena had remarked, “Brady has shit the bed. Open challenge to anyone in the promotion. 170-185 international fight week.” Brady expressed his disappointment in Della Maddalena’s reaction, stating that he expected such comments from internet trolls, but not from a fellow fighter. He hoped that Della Maddalena and his teammates would never have to go through a similar situation in the future and looked forward to the day they would meet in the cage.

Who will Jack Della Maddalena face next?

Jack Della Maddalena, the popular Australian UFC fighter, has experienced a change in plans for his upcoming bout at UFC 290. His original opponent, Sean Brady, had to withdraw from the fight due to a shoulder injury. However, Maddalena has now been assigned a new opponent, Josiah Harrell, a rising undefeated prospect from Ohio.

Harrell gained some recognition among hardcore MMA fans after a viral clip showed him executing a remarkable tackle on his opponent, Mike Roberts, through the cage door at LFA 160 on June 16. With an undefeated professional record of seven wins and no losses, as well as six victories as an amateur, Harrell has displayed an impressive finishing rate, with four KO/TKO wins and three submissions. He previously won the welterweight championship in the Ohio Combat League before transitioning to LFA and generating buzz with his viral takedown.

This fight presents a rare opportunity for a UFC debutant like Harrell to enter the welterweight rankings immediately with a victory. Maddalena currently holds the no.14 ranking in the UFC welterweight division, so a win for Harrell would likely secure him a comfortable position in the top 15. The last time such an upset occurred was during UFC 289, when late-notice debutant Steve Erceg seized the no.14 spot from David Dvorak, despite entering the fight as a +330 underdog.

While the original matchup between Maddalena and Brady may have had its own level of anticipation, the addition of Harrell to UFC 290 has undoubtedly heightened the stakes. Maddalena has worked hard to achieve his current ranking, and now he must face a new challenge in the form of the undefeated Harrell. The outcome of this bout could have significant implications for both fighters.
