Umaga Career
Umaga is a member of the Anoa’i family, which is a Samoan wrestling family. Fatu trained with his cousin Matt Anoa’i at the Wild Samoan professional wrestling school. Fatu debuted with his uncle Afa’s WXW promotion in 1995.
Fatu signed development contracts with his cousin Matt for WWF, and their tag-team name was “The Island Boyz. Fatu used the ring name, Elmo. They also won the HWA Tag Team Championship.
They made their main roster debut on July 22, 2002, as enforcers of Eric Bischoff attacking random wrestlers. Fatu was named Jamal, and Anoa’i was named Rosey. Fatu was released from the WWE contract in 2003 after a bar fight involvement.
Umaga played many international wrestling circuits and other professional promotions like TNA, All Japan Pro Wrestling, etc.
He returned to WWE in 2005 under the ring name Umaga. Strangely Umaga is the name of the most painful part of the Samoan tattooing process, meaning “The End.”
In his debut match, he attacked Ric Flair at the orders of Estrada. Umaga defeated Flair at Backlash on April 30, and it started a winning streak against a majority of the roster, including John Cena, Shawn Michaels, and Triple H.
Fatu defeated Jeff Hary for the Intercontinental Championship and then again became the Intercontinental Champion twice. This was his only title in WWE.
Umaga was a part of an exciting match-up named The Battle of the Billionaires at WrestleMania 23. He was a representative for Vince McMahon against Donald Trump, who Bobby Lashley accompanied.
Fatu lost the “Battle of Billionaires” hair vs. hair match which caused McMahon to shave his whole head to bald. He also went on to win the ECW Championship for Vince against Lashley in a handicap match.
Umaga was released from WWE due to the violation of the Wellness Policy in 2008, and his last appearance came at Extreme Rules against Punk in a Samoan Strap match.
Umaga Family and Personal Life
Umaga was married to his wife LT, and he had four children. It was found that Fatu purchased pharmaceuticals from an online pharmacy which led to the violation of the WWE Talent Wellness program.
Fatu is Sam and Solofa (Rikishi) and uncle of The Usos, who were all professional wrestlers. He was also the cousin of Yokozuna, The Rock, Rosey, and Roman Reigns.
On December 4, 2009, Fatu died due to a heart attack, found by his wife in their Texas home with blood coming from his nose. He was on life support and later suffered another heart attack. It was reported that Umaga had the drugs a pain killer, Soma muscle relaxant, and Valium, which caused this.
