World No. 3 Jessica Pegula will square off against two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in a group-stage match at the 2023 United Cup on Friday.
The American tennis pro enjoyed a fantastic season in 2022. She managed to win one title in the year and it came at the Guadalajara Open. While Pegula didn’t have a plethora of titles to show for her efforts in 2022 but she was certainly one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour.
Pegula won 42 singles matches in the year while having lost 21. The 28-year-old made the cut for both the singles and doubles events at the WTA Finals. However, she failed to progress beyond the group stages in both events. She lost all three of her group-stage encounters in the WTA Finals against Maria Sakkari, Ons Jabeur, and Aryna Sabalenka. Pegula will be eying a strong start to the new season.
The experienced campaigner also won one title this year. She defeated Jelena Ostapenko in the finals in Eastbourne to bag her 29th career title. In the season, Kvitova managed to win 27 matches while having lost 19.
The world No. 16 played her last tournament on the tour in 2022 at the Guadalajara Open. She defeated Bernarda Pera in the round of 64 but eventually lost to 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu, in the following round.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 2-1 in favor of Kvitova. Pegula registered her first win over Kvitova in their most recent meeting at the 2022 US Open in straight sets.
Prediction: Jessica Pegula to win in straight sets.
