Two-time US Open champion Laura Siegemund takes on two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the group stage of the 2023 United Cup.
The 34-year-old won her first WTA 1000 doubles title at the Miami Open. Teaming with Russia’s Vera Zvonareva, Siegemund defeated the team of Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens in straight sets. As far as her performances in singles in 2022, Siegemund didn’t deliver a lot.
In 36 matches she played in the year, the experienced campaigner managed only 21 wins and 15 losses. She had a successful year in doubles, winning 3 titles and 23 matches while losing just 7 times. Siegemund will have to be at her best to push Kvitova beyond her limits.
The veteran from the Czech Republic had a topsy-turvy season in 2022. She managed to add to her 28 singles titles by winning the finals in Eastbourne as she got the better of former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Kvitova won 27 out of the 46 matches she played on the tour in 2022.
The hopes of the Czech Republic will rest firmly on the shoulders of Kvitova. The 32-year-old is an inspirational figure for tennis in the country and she will look to motivate the players in her team as the tournament rolls on. Her good performance is quite essential as it would give his teammates a lot of confidence to excel in their matches.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 2-0 in favor of Kvitova. She defeated Siegemund in their most recent encounter at the 2020 French Open quarterfinals in straight sets.
Prediction: Petra Kvitova to win in straight sets.
