Spanish veteran Pablo Carreno Busta locks horns with British No. 2 Dan Evans in the group stage of the 2023 United Cup.
The 31-year-old entered the Canadian Open as an unseeded player. He went on to win the tournament by defeating Hubert Hurkacz in the final. By virtue of this win, Carreno Busta became the first unseeded player to win the tournament in 20 years since Guillermo Canas in 2002. This was the first Masters title he won in his career.
After three quarterfinal appearances at the Gijon Open, Tennis Napoli Cup, and the Basel Open, Carreno Busta’s season ended with a loss against Tommy Paul in the round of 16 of the Paris Masters.
The British veteran did not have too many memorable results in 2022 but he did manage to reach the third round at the Australian Open for the second time in his career. Another notable moment for Evans came at the Canadian Open when he managed to reach the semifinals. His journey ended with a loss against Carreno Busta.
Evans made the quarterfinals of the European Open and the Vienna Open before taking part in the Paris Masters. His 2022 season came to an end with a loss in the round of 32 against fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-0 in favor of Carreno Busta. He defeated Evans in the semifinals of the 2022 Canadian Open in three sets.
Prediction: Dan Evans to win in three sets.
