The experienced Pablo Carreno Busta locks horns with Australia’s Jason Kubler in the group stage of the 2023 United Cup.
The 31-year-old finished the season at No. 13 in the ATP rankings. He managed to win his maiden Masters title in 2022 after getting past Hubert Hurkacz in the Canadian Open final. Carreno Busta also finished runner-up at the Barcelona Open and the Swedish Open.
The Spaniard’s season came to an end after he was ousted by Tommy Paul in the round of 16 of the Paris Masters in straight sets. Carreno Busta will hope to begin the new season on a positive note.
The former junior world No. 1 had an eventful start to the new season. He faced Dan Evans in his first match at the United Cup. After bagging the first set convincingly, Kubler was outplayed by Evans as the second set got underway. The 29-year-old lost the first five sets and was staring down the barrel. However, he didn’t let his shoulders drop and bounced back miraculously, and eventually won the match 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).
A win like this gives a player a lot of confidence. Kubler will be heading into this match with Carreno Busta beaming with confidence but he would surely not want to get into a 0-5 situation once again.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-0 in favor of Pablo Carreno Busta. He defeated Jason Kubler in four sets in the 2018 Australian Open.
Prediction: Jason Kubler to win in three sets.
