World No. 9 Taylor Fritz collides with world No. 10 Hubert Hurkacz as the United States takes on Poland in the semifinals of the 2023 United Cup on Saturday.
The in-form American player has lost just one match so far in the competition. He began his campaign in Sydney with a win in straight sets against Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-4. Fritz went on to double the joy for the USA as he teamed with Jessica Pegula and took down the team of Lehecka and Marie Bouzkova in a mixed doubles clash.
Fritz produced a scintillating performance against former world No. 2 Alexander Zverev and defeated the German player in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. The 25-year-old lost his first match of the season against British No. 1 Cameron Norrie in a closely-contested three-set affair that ended 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
The Polish star has also lost just one match in the United Cup so far. He defeated Alexander Bublik in three sets to get his campaign off to a rollicking start. In the mixed doubles encounter, Hurkacz and Iga Swiatek beat the team of Grigory Lomakin and Zhibek Kulambayeva in straight sets.
Hurkacz continued to impress in his next singles match against Stan Wawrinka. The former defeated the Swiss veteran in straight sets 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. This win was crucial for the Polish side as it helped them get the better of Switzerland 3-2. Hurkacz lost to Matteo Berrettini in three sets. However, Hurkacz and Swiatek notched up an important win against the team of Lorenzo Musetti and Camila Rosatello to sail into the semis.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-1. Their most recent meeting was over three years ago when Hurkacz won the match in straight sets at the 2019 Canadian Open.
Prediction: Taylor Fritz to win in three sets.
