Novak Djokovic vs Daniil Medvedev head to head: Who has the upper hand going into US Open 2021 final?
The US Open 2021 men’s singles final will see a mouth watering clash between the top two players in the world. World number 1 Novak Djokovic will take on World number 2 Daniil Medvedev.
Medvedev who made him first US Open appearance in 2019 has managed to reach the finals for the second time in three years.
The Russian made his path to the finals look fairly easy. He started his US Open 2021 against Russian R. Gasquet in the first round and went on to beat D.Koepfer, P. Andujar, D. Evans, B. van de Zandschulp to reach the semi-finals where he defeated Canadian F. Auger Allassime.
The Russian has had a dominating run with losing only one set on his way to the finals. In the quarter finals against B. van de Zandschulp he lost the third set. Marking his only lost set on his way to the finals.
The World number 1 is not new to being on the finals. With Nadal and Federer out of the US Open Djokovic was a safe bet to reach the finals.
The Serbian kicked off his campaign against Danish H. Rune in the first round. in route to the final he beat T. Griekspoor, K. Nishikori, J. Brooksby, M. Berrettini to reach the Semi-finals against A. Zevrev which was a rematch of Olympics 2020 semi-final.
The top two players in the world have clashed against each other on eight occasions. Djokovic leads the head to head battle with five victories over Medvedev’s three.
The two first locked horns in 2017. They met each other at the Davis Cup where Djokovic got the better of Medvedev. They met again in the same year at ATP Eastbourne where the history repeated itself and the Serb got the job done yet again.
In 2019, they met three times first at the Australian Open Round 16 where Djokovic made the series 3-0. The next two meetings of the year went to the Russians way when he defeated Djokovic at ATP Masters at Cincinnati and Monte Carlo Monaco.
In 2020, they faced each other twice winning one match each. Djokovic won at the ATP Cup Australia and Medvedev won at the Nitto ATP Finals Great Britain.
In 2021 they met once till now at the Australian Open final where the Serbian defeated Medvedev yet again to clinch the Australian Open title.
Come Sunday, September 12th this will be their ninth overall meeting and second meeting for the year. The two clash again at the US Open 2021 finals.
Will Medvedev win the US Open for the first time in his career and squeeze the series down to 5-4 or The Serbian will prevail yet again on top to win his 21st Grand Slam?
