The three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray will lock horns with Francisco Cerundolo in a first-round match of the US Open 2022 tournament.
The seasoned campaigner has won 20 matches and lost 14 this year. He began 2022 ranked World No. 134 and currently he sits at No. 49. Murray has reached two finals this year. He made it to the final of the Sydney International before losing to Aslan Karatsev. The second final Murray played this year was at the Stuttgart Open but Matteo Berretitini outplayed him this time.
The 35-year-old is coming into the tournament on the back of a disappointing Cincinnati Masters campaign where he defeated Stan Wawrinka in the first round but lost in the second to Cameron Norrie. Last year at Flushing Meadows, Murray lost in the first round against Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets.
The Argentine won the Challenger event in Santa Cruz but his biggest triumph this year came at the Swedish Open, where he defeated compatriot Sebastian Baez in the final to win his first ATP title.
Like Murray, Cerundolo is also coming into the US Open after having a short stay at the Cincinnati Masters, as he lost in the first round against Roberto Bautista Agut. That’s not all, as Cerundolo has 20 wins and 14 losses this season like his upcoming opponent.
Francisco Cerundolo and Andy Murray have not faced each other before. So the head-to-head stands at 0-0.
Prediction: Francisco Cerundolo to win in five sets.
