The defending champion Emma Raducanu will have a tricky test first up as she takes on the experienced Alize Cornet in the first round of the US Open.
She took the tennis world by storm with her sensational performance in last year’s US Open. Emma Raducanu was playing just her second Grand Slam tournament. The youngster progressed from the qualifiers and won the tournament without dropping a set. The Bromley-based Raducanu was expected to dominate world tennis from thereon but things have not been going smoothly. She has struggled for form and has looked out of sorts in several instances.
Raducanu has not reached beyond the quarterfinal stage of any competition following her US Open triumph. At the recently concluded Cincinnati Masters, Raducanu played some good tennis to defeat the likes of Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka. However, her promising run ended in the round of 16 following a loss to Jessica Pegula.
The Frenchwoman did not start the year on a great note. She was ousted in the first rounds in both Melbourne and Adelaide. However, she performed well at the Australian Open and reached her first-ever Grand Slam quarter-final. Since then, Cornet lacked consistency and exited in the first rounds of a few tournaments.
The 32-year-old reached two semifinals this year. The first of them came at the Bad Homburg Open while the other one came at the ongoing Tennis in the Land tournament.
The head-to-head scoreline stands at 0-0 as Emma Raducanu and Alize Cornet have not faced each other before.
Prediction: Emma Raducanu to win in three sets.
