The home favorite Jessica Pegula takes on World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the US Open quarterfinal on Wednesday.
She entered the tournament as the hot favorite and has lived up to the expectations so far. The 2022 French Open champion is looking for her second major title of the year.
She started off with a convincing win against Jasmine Paolini in straight sets. Swiatek continued her dominance in the second and third rounds defeating Sloane Stephens and Lauren Davis in straight sets. The Polish star lost her first set in the tournament against German tennis pro – Jule Niemeier. After dropping the first set, Swiatek managed to storm back into the match winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.
The 28-year-old is carrying the expectations of the home fans on her shoulders being the only American player left in the women’s event.
Jessica Pegula began her campaign with a confident win against Viktorija Golubic in straight sets. In the second round, she defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich with relative ease. Pegula’s third-round opponent Yue Yuan managed to win the second set but the experienced campaigner showed her class in the first and third sets to progress to the fourth round. Pegula completely outplayed 2-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova in the fourth round, winning the match 6-3, 6-2.
Iga Swiatek has a slender 2-1 lead in the head-to-head against Jessica Pegula. Their latest meeting came in the French Open quarterfinals where Swiatek won in straight sets and eventually went on to win the title.
Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in three sets.
