An intriguing mixed doubles final is all set to mesmerize us as Storm Sanders and John Peers take on the team of Kirsten Flipkens and Edouard Roger-Vasselin at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday.
The unseeded duo kickstarted their campaign with a comprehensive win against Giuliana Olmos and Marcelo Arevalo in the first round. They followed it up with another win in straight sets against Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Kevin Krawietz in the round of 16.
In the quarterfinals, they lost the first set to the Australian duo of Matthew Ebden and Samantha Stosur but came back strongly to win the match 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 11-9. The semifinal match against Zhang Shuai and Mate Pavic turned out to be quite an interesting affair. The Chinese-Croatian duo lost the first set but leveled things up in the second. Eventually, Flipkens and Roger-Vasselin won the match 6-4, 5-7, 10-6. This will be the first Grand Slam mixed doubles final appearance for both of them.
The fourth-seeded pair defeated the American duo of Catherine Harrison and Robert Galloway in the first round in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. In the second round, they defeated another American duo of Bernarda Pera and Jackson Withrow.
Sanders and Peers defeated Leylah Fernandez and Jack Sock 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) to win the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the Australian duo broke American hearts once again as they ousted the team of William Blumberg and Caty McNally 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 10-8.
