The Tunisian No. 1 Ons Jabeur takes on a confident Ajla Tomljanovic in the quarterfinals of the US Open.
Ons Jabeur
The 28-year-old impressed the tennis world with a run to the Wimbledon finals earlier in the year. She has backed up that performance with what has been an impressive campaign at this year’s US Open. The World No. 5 has reached the US Open quarterfinals for the first time in her career. Jabeur became the first African lady to reach the US Open quarterfinals since 1998.
She defeated Madison Brengle and Elizabeth Mandlik in the first two rounds by an identical scoreline of 7-5, 6-2. In the third round, Jabeur faced yet another American player Shelby Rogers. The 29-year-old managed to win the first set but Jabeur took control of the match from thereon to triumph 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. In the fourth round, Jabeur defeated Veronika Kudermetova 7-6 (7-1), 6-4.
Ajla Tomljanovic
The Australian tennis pro’s best performance in 2022 came at Wimbledon, where she reached the quarterfinals. Otherwise, her returns this year have not been that impressive.
Tomljanovic began her US Open campaign with a win in straight sets against Karolina Muchova. In the second round, she registered a come-from-behind win against Evgeniya Rodina. Ajla Tomljanovic faced the legendary Serena Williams in the third round. Tomljanovic did well to hold her nerves in a match that had crowds chanting wholeheartedly for her opponent. The 29-year-old won 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1 and may go down in history as Williams’ last opponent. In the round of 16, Tomljanovic defeated Ludmilla Samsonova in straight sets 7-6 (10-8), 6-1.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
Ons Jabeur leads the head-to-head 2-0. Their first meeting was in 2012 while the next one came earlier in the year in Rome.
Prediction: Ons Jabeur to win in three sets.
