It’s the United States versus the Czech Republic in the Women’s doubles final as Katerina Siniakova and Barbora Krejcikova take on Taylor Townsend and Caty McNally on Sunday in the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The duo from the Czech Republic will be playing their first US Open final together. Siniakova ranked World No. 3 and Krejcikova ranked World No. 7 are successful players in the doubles circuit. Together, they won the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles this year.
They began their campaign with a win against the Romanian duo of Elena-Gabriela Ruse and Monica Niculescu in a three-set affair. In the second round, they made light work of Ana Bogdan and Sabrina Santamaria to progress to the round of 16. The team of Chang Hao-ching and Shuko Aoyama proved to be no match for the confident duo of Krejcikova and Siniakova. They won the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, Krejcikova and Siniakova triumphed over Giuliana Olmos and Gabriela Dabrowski 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3. In the semifinals, they defeated the Australian-American duo of Ellen Perez and Nicole Melichar-Martinez 6-3, 5-7 (4-7), 6-3 to punch their tickets to the final.
After losing in the first round at the Cincinnati Masters, Townsend and McNally went back to the drawing board and brought their A-game.
McNally and Townsend defeated Nuria Parrizas-Diaz and Arantxa Rus in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to kickstart their campaign. In round two, they got the better of Erin Routliffe and Alicja Rosolska in three sets. In the round of 16, the American duo defeated Bernarda Pera and Dalma Galfi 6-4. 6-4. Demi Schuurs and Desirae Krawczyk also lost to Townsend and McNally in straight sets in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, they defeated Caroline Dolehide and Storm Sanders 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to progress to the final.
