Choosing a vegan lifestyle is the new norm; be it an actor or an athlete. Even common people are bending towards veganism because of its various advantages and health benefits.

Some people adopt a vegan lifestyle because of its moral and ethical aspects while others choose it because of its beneficiary and performance-enhancing aspects. Either way, a vegan diet seems to be the future of this world.

Athletes have always been the prime example of desired fitness and good health. From male athletes to female athletes, if one looks around, there is no shortage of role models.

Nowadays, people look into various factors before choosing an athlete as their role model. It can be their performance, their lifestyle, their eating habits, etc. Whatever it may be, every athlete is bound by a strict training plan and even a stricter diet plan.

WNBA players are just as famous as their NBA counterparts. Like the NBA players, the WNBA players also push themselves to extreme limits for achieving perfection.

Like many basketball players, the WNBA players are also opting for dietary changes and is adopting a vegan lifestyle to improve their performance.  

Here are the top 3 WNBA players who swear by their vegan diet

1. Diana Taurasi

Diana Lorena Taurasi is a 39-year-old WNBA player who plays for the Arizona-based Phoenix Mercury. Sher has won three WNBA championships (2007, 2009, 2014), one WNBA Most Valuable Player Award (2009), two WNBA Finals MVP Award (2009, 2014), and four Olympic Gold medals (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016).

She is known as one of the greatest shooters in the modern-day game and has five scoring titles and three FIBA World Cups. She also enjoys the nicknames of ‘White Mamba’ for her scoring ability in difficult situations, and ‘the Michael Jordan of the WNBA’. Needless to say, Taurasi is a phenomenal basketball player.

Taurasi reportedly shifted to an entirely plant-based diet in 2015 for health reasons.

“I have been vegan for about three years now and I think it is something I have really benefitted from” she told Women’s Fitness.  “Just staying away from foods that cause a lot of inflammation, fats and sugars that everyone knows are obviously a little counterproductive if you eat large amounts of them. So, I have stayed more on a plant-based diet and it has really benefitted me.”

The benefits of a plant-based diet are clearly visible on Taurasi’s part as she sets to represent the USA Women’s basketball team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

2. Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Cambage

Elizabeth Cambage is of Australian nationality who plays in the WNBA, as an all-star center for the Las Vegas Aces.

The 29-year-old is a four-time WNBA All-Star (2011, 2018, 2019, 2021), who had an exceptional 2018 season and subsequently won the WNBA Peak Performer Award (2018). Liz was also named to the 2019 All-WNBA Second Team, and she finished the season ranked 10th in the league in scoring, 7th in rebounding, and 6th in blocked shots.

She also represented the Australian women’s basketball team at the 2012 London Olympics and eventually won a bronze medal.

Liz is a part of a growing group of WNBA and NBA players who have adopted a plant-based lifestyle. Other notable plant-based basketball players include Kyrie Irving, Chris Paul, JaVale McGee, DeAndre Jordan, and beforementioned, Diana Taurasi.

3. Nneka Ogwumike

Nneka Ogwumike is a 31-year-old WNBA player who plays for the Los Angeles Sparks.

The No. 30 wearing Power forward is a WNBA champion (2016), WNBA MVP (2016), and the WNBA Rookie of the Year (2012).

The six-time WNBA All-Star is an ardent follower of a plant-based diet. She reportedly turned vegan in 2017 and still aspires to continue her vegan practices to this day. Recently, she incorporated seafood into her diet to balance her meals.

In an interview with GQ, she stated, “I always tell people that instead of “dieting,” you have to consider it a lifestyle. I feel like “diets” restrict people to rules. For me, I approach my diet and what I put into my body as a way of life.”
