The world No. 12 Jannik Sinner will challenge the No. 1 seed Daniil Medvedev in what promises to be an intriguing quarter-final clash in the Vienna Open on Friday.
Daniil Medvedev
The former world No. 1 is eyeing his second title this season after his first win came in the Los Cabos Open in August. Medvedev came into the tournament on the back of a decent campaign in Astana where he made it to the semis. He faced Novak Djokovic in what was a highly-anticipated encounter. The match was interestingly poised with both players winning a set each when the 2021 US Open champion was forced to retire.
So far in Vienna, Medvedev has bulldozed his way into the quarterfinals. Comprehensive wins against Nikoloz Basilashvili and Dominic Thiem have seen Medvedev reach the quarterfinals for the second time in as many attempts in Vienna. In the first match with the Georgian, Medvedev showed his class to come out victorious in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. In the round of 16, Medvedev got the better of Thiem 6-3, 6-3.
Jannik Sinner
The 21-year-old has reached his third consecutive quarterfinals. He made it to the semis in the Sofia Open but had to pull out midway during his match against Holger Rune owing to an ankle injury.
The Italian star has also been clinical so far in Vienna, much like his upcoming opponent, Medvedev. In the first match, Sinner made light work of Cristian Garin and won the match 6-3, 6-2. The talented youngster followed it up with another fine performance against Francisco Cerundolo and won the match in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 3-0 in favor of Daniil Medvedev. At the 2021 ATP Finals, Medvedev defeated Sinner in three sets.
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev to win in three sets.
