The world No. 19 Denis Shapovalov will lock horns with the world No. 27 Borna Coric in the semifinals of the Vienna Open on Saturday.
Denis Shapovalov
The Canadian youngster reached his third semifinal in October. He has defeated some big names en route to the semis and will go into the match brimming with confidence.
Shapovalov began his campaign in Vienna with a solid 6-4, 6-4 win against Jurij Rodionov in the round of 32. The 23-year-old upped the ante in the round of 16 as he defeated the fourth seed, Taylor Fritz in an intriguing contest. Shapovalov started strongly and won the first set with ease. Fritz came back to win the second set and the match went down to the decisive third set. Shapovalov held his nerves and got the better of the American star. In the quarterfinals, Shapovalov faced the current British world No. 2, Dan Evans, and made light work of the veteran. The southpaw won the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
Borna Coric
The resurgence began when Borna Coric defied all odds and won the Cincinnati Masters. He had a very tough draw and had to get past big names like Felix Auger-Aliassime, Cameron Norrie, and Stefanos Tsitsipas to bag his third ATP title.
The Croatian tennis pro began with a hard-fought win against the French qualifier Quentin Halys in the first round. After losing the first set, Coric showed great determination to bounce back and eventually won the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, he once again got the better of Tsitsipas. The 25-year-old once again lost the first set but came back strongly to win the match 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). In the quarterfinals, Coric played another three-set thriller against the fifth seed Hubert Hurkacz. The match ended 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-5) in favor of the former world No. 12.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 2-1 in favor of Coric. Shapovalov won their previous encounter at the 2022 Japan Open in straight sets.
Prediction: Denis Shapovalov to win in three sets.
