The former US Open champion Dominic Thiem takes on the world No. 30 Tommy Paul in the round of 32 of the Vienna Open on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old has shown signs of a resurgence, especially in his last couple of tournaments. Until the Swedish Open in July where he reached the quarterfinals, Thiem did not produce any result of note. He followed it up with a run to the quarterfinals of the Swiss Open. In the Austrian Open, he made it to the quarterfinals. After a few disappointing results, in the subsequent tournaments, the former world No. 3 made it to the semifinals of the Gijon Open earlier this month.
Thiem comes into the tournament on the back of a good campaign in Antwerp where he made it to the semis. This was his second consecutive semi-final appearance. He eventually lost to Sebastian Korda.
The American tennis pro ended 2021 on a strong note winning the Stockholm Open. He also had a decent start to 2022, reaching the quarterfinals in the two tournaments in Adelaide. However, the quarterfinals have proved to be his undoing this season as he has lost 8 times at that stage and won only once at the Delray Beach Open. Paul is still awaiting his first title this season. In fact, he has not played a final this year so far.
The 25-year-old lost in his title defense in the Stockholm Open. He was comprehensively defeated by Mikael Ymer in straight sets in the round of 16.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-0 in favor of Dominic Thiem. He defeated Paul at the 2019 French Open in four sets.
Prediction: Dominic Thiem to win in three sets.
