Under the Hall of Fame coach, the club never had a losing season.

Lombardi departed Green Bay in 1969 to return to the field as the head coach of the Washington Redskins, after resigning from coaching after the 1967 season and working solely as the Packers’ general manager. Lombardi showed he still had it with his new team, bringing them to their first winning season in 14 years.

After just one year with the Redskins, he was diagnosed with an aggressive type of colon cancer in the summer of 1970. On September 3, 1970, he died over two months later.

Shortly after his death, the NFL’s Super Bowl trophy was renamed in his honor. The Pro Football Hall of Fame inducted the late coach in 1971.

Lombardi has won six NFL championships with the Packers, including three Super Bowls, and amass over 100 career victories.
