The family moved back to New York, where Szczerbiak attended Cold Spring Harbor High School and averaged 36.6 points and 15 rebounds in the 1994-95 season. He committed to attending Miami University where he was named as the MAC Player of the Year, second-team All American by the Associated Press, and first-team All-American by Basketball News and Sports Illustrated.
The Minnesota Timberwolves picked him sixth overall in the 1999 NBA Draft. He played eight seasons with the Wolves.
