Watford Opinion: Why the Hornets should go all out for Terence Kongolo?

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Watford and Aston Villa are interested in signing Huddersfield Town defender Terence Kongolo.

The four-cap Netherlands international was a regular in Huddersfield’s starting XI, appearing 32 times last season. He was one of the rare bright sparks in an otherwise miserable campaign for the Terriers which ended in their relegation from the top-flight.

Newly-promoted Aston Villa have already made their presence felt in the summer transfer window and are trying to beef up their squad as much as they can before the start of the season. But Watford must beat the Villans to the signature of Terence Kongolo to solve the problem area that currently resides within their squad.

The Hornets impressed last season and should have easily achieved a top-half finish had they won their last three games of 2018/19. They also suffered a battering at the hands of Manchester City in the FA Cup final, but there were a lot of positives to take for Javi Gracia and he must build on from that next term.

Watford were an exciting unit going forward, with the likes of Gerard Deulofeu, Will Hughes, Roberto Pereyra and Troy Deeney impressing in the attack. As good as they were in attack, the Hornets were equally poor defensively as Gracia’s men conceded 59 goals. That needs to change if Gracia and his boys are to challenge for a place in Europe.

Thus, signing a central defender to partner either with Craig Cathcart or Christian Kabasele is the need of the hour and Watford would do a good job by signing Terence Kongolo.

A versatile defender, Kongolo can operate both in central defence and left-back with utmost comfort. Quick at the back but also very powerful, the Netherlands international is a good reader of the game and strong on the ball. He is comfortable with the ball at his feet and usually is an efficient passer from the back.

The 25-year-old is strong in the air and robust in the challenge, whilst having the pace to make recovery runs.

The ex-Feyenoord man will offer a physical presence to Watford’s backline and can also slot in at left-back when required. Plus, Kongolo has gained good experience of Premier League football and so he’ll be a valuable addition to the Hornets backline in every manner.

Verdict

After conceding over 50 goals in the league last season, Watford are right in looking to sign a new defender this summer. If they can beat Aston Villa and lure Kongolo away from Huddersfield, Gracia would have a potential gem in his hands.
