Watford Opinion: Why the Hornets should go all out for Lebo Mothiba?

Strasbourg star Lebo Mothiba’s agent, Jihed Taniche, has claimed Premier League club Watford are interested in signing his client.

The South African, 23, enjoyed an impressive first season with Strasbourg in Ligue 1 following a big-money move from Lille as he scored 11 goals, whilst helping his club win the Coupe de la Ligue and secure Europa League football next term.

Strasbourg qualifying for Europe should make it tough for Watford to sign Lebo Mothiba. Yet, they must do everything possible to get their man this summer.

Watford looked set to finish in the top half of the Premier League table but defeats in the last three games of the season meant they ended 11th on the table. Even though they were thrashed 6-0 in the FA Cup final at the hands of Manchester City, Javi Gracia will be pleased with how his team performed throughout the campaign.

The summer transfer window gives Gracia a chance to shape his squad and challenge for a place in Europe next term. One of the most important areas that need strengthening over the summer is the forward department.

In Troy Deeney, Roberto Pereyra, Will Hughes and Gerard Deulofeu, the Hornets had a standard attack. But only Deeney hit double figures for goals last season and while Deulofeu caught the eye with a string of dazzling displays, Gracia’s side need a clinical goalscorer.

Lebo Mothiba could certainly be that player for Watford. A centre-forward by trade, the South African can also play as a supporting striker, owing to his brilliant technical abilities and high levels of tactical intelligence. He has the burst of pace to terrorise the defenders, while his dribbling skills and ability on the ball make him such a threat in the final third.

The 23-year-old is excellent with both feet and can strike the ball powerfully from a long distance. Mothiba is also more than capable of setting up goals with his accurate crossing and subtle movement off the ball. Also, he has a great sense of positioning and often appears to be in the right place at the right time.

Verdict

Watford need more depth and quality in their attacking ranks if they are to challenge for a place in Europe next season. They need someone to take the pressure off Deeney’s shoulders and Lebo Mothiba perfectly fits the bill.
