Karen You aka Wendy Choo is an American professional wrestler. She is currently signed to WWE, where she performs on the NXT brand. She is known for her appearances in Ring of Honor and her different gimmicks.
Yu was first trained to wrestle by Johnny Rodz at Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn. For those who don’t know, Rodz worked for WWE from 1965 to 1985. Rodz has trained wrestlers like W. Morrissey, Tazz, The Dudley Boyz, Tommy Dreamer, and many more. then by Damian Adams at the Team Adams Pro Wrestling Academy in Wharton, New Jersey. She debuted under her birth name in 2014 in a New-York based promotion named Victory Pro Wrestling (VPW). Over the following years, she competed on the independent circuit, primarily in the Northeastern United States.
In 2016, she adopted the ring name “Karen Q”. She won her first title in April 2016, defeating Nikki Addams for the VPW Women’s Championship. Next year she won the East Coast Wrestling Association Women’s Championship.
Before WWE, Yu appeared in the Ring of Honor on April 2017. At Survival of the Fittest in November 2017, she lost to Deonna Purrazzo in a no-disqualification match. On December 2018 Yu took part in a four-way match for the ROH Women of Honor World Championship that was won by Kelly Klein, marking her first pay-per-view appearance.
You made her first appearance with WWE in August 2018, competing in the Mae Young Classic tournament under the ring name “Karen Q”. In February 2019 she signed a contract with WWE and was assigned to WWE Performance Center.
From February to July 2019, she wrestled for WWE as “Karen Q”, primarily teaming with Xia Li on NXT house shows. In July 2019, Yu suffered a fractured lateral malleolus; she spent the next two years rehabilitating, undergoing two surgeries.
In December 2020, Yu was reintroduced on NXT as “Mei Ying”, the leader of the stable “Tian Sha” alongside Xia Li and Boa. In November 2021, the Mei Ying character was dropped.
Choo has been a part of several gimmicks. A few months ago she had a supernatural gimmick in Mei Ying, a 1,000-year-old woman who acted as a “Yoda” for the Tian Sha stable. The character had ancient supernatural powers and she was the leader of Tian Sha — a tag team that consisted of Xia Li and Boa. This Tian Shan program was a personal favourite of both Triple H and Shawn Michaels. But the gimmick was scrapped once Xia Li moved to the main roster.
She again made her comeback and this time repackaged as “Wendy Choo” with a unique new gimmick (a constantly tired wrestler who performs in a onesie) in which she appeared wearing pyjamas, looking like she’d just woken up from a nap. She even laid down in the middle of the ring for a little nap while being the legal competitor.
In March 2022, Choo and Dakota Kai competed in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, losing to Io Shirai and Kay Lee Ray in the finals. In June 2022 at In Your House, Choo unsuccessfully challenged Mandy Rose for the NXT Women’s Championship. She has now signed a multi-year deal with WWE.
Since being repackaged under her new gimmick, Wendy Choo has suffered one loss on NXT 2.0. Her only defeat was against newcomer Tiffany Stratton. After an injury in 2023, Wendy Choo is fit again and ready for the battle.
Wendy was born on January 18, 1992, in Queens, New York. She is Chinese American by nationality. There is not much information regarding her parents as she has not disclosed those information. There is not much information regarding her siblings as well.
Yu participated in gymnastics from the age of five. She received an NCAA Division II scholarship for volleyball, earning a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Queens College and a master’s degree in teaching from Lehman College. Before becoming a professional wrestler, she taught physical education at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School and coached gymnastics at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School.
Choo has been in a relationship with another pro wrestler who goes by the name Bison XL. After being together for a few years they got engaged in August 2020. Her boyfriend made his AEW debut on an episode of Dark where he teamed up with Toa Liona to take on 2point0 a few months back. In 2021, Choo and Bison XL got married.
Wendy also has a Shih Tzu Mix breed dog named Mochi. She often posts pictures with Mochi on her social media accounts. Wendy has set up a separate Instagram account for her dog and it already has over 200+ posts at the moment.
