West Brom Opinion: Three managers who could replace Darren Moore
According to the Guardian, West Brom have sacked head coach Darren Moore after a disappointing 1-1 draw at home against Ipswich Town. Chief executive Mark Jenkins cited Moore’s failure to engineer consistency of form and results as the primary reason behind his dismissal.
The same report also claims that first-team coach James Shan has taken over as the interim manager but the club hierarchy has decided to appoint a permanent manager as soon as possible.
West Brom’s unimpressive result against Ipswich meant that the Baggies remained without a home victory in the Championship since Boxing Day, having won only 4 out of their last 12 fixtures.
However, with the team sitting 4th in the standings and still very much in the race for a place in the promotion playoffs, the decision to pull the trigger on Moore might come as a surprise to many fans.
All is not lost following Moore’s dismissal and West Brom still have plenty to play for in the remainder of the season. They need to appoint a permanent manager at the earliest and here are 3 potential candidates for the post:-
1. Slavisa Jokanovic
The Serbian took charge of Watford in 2014 and guided the Hornets to a successful season in the Championship which saw them secure automatic promotion to the 2015-16 Premier League.
He stepped down from the post at the end of the season due to a contract dispute and took charge of Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv, helping the club make it to the group stages of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 11 years.
Jokanovic also helped Fulham make it to the Premier League this season as the Cottagers beat Aston Villa in the 2017-18 Championship playoff finals.
The 50-year-old failed to inspire the team in the Premier League which eventually led to his dismissal but, with his experience of two promotion-winning campaigns, the Serb would be a good choice for the Baggies.
Furthermore, he is noted for his free-flowing and aesthetic brand of football, which should suit West Brom.
2. David Wagner
The former manager of Borussia Dortmund’s reserve team helped Huddersfield Town secure promotion to the 2017-18 Premier League via a victory over Reading in the playoff finals.
In the following season in the Premier League, the German-American guided the Terriers to an improbable achievement of surviving in the Premier League, something that was considered as a feat of rare charisma and intelligence.
Wagner terminated his contract with Huddersfield in January 2019 upon mutual consent, with the Terriers at the bottom of the table and staring at relegation.
West Brom need someone to reunite the squad following Moore’s dismissal and Wagner is certainly the right man for that purpose.
Moreover, he showed his acumen in the transfer market during his time at Huddersfield Town and his presence should help the Baggies attract some quality players from across the continent.
3. Alex Neil
The Scottish manager who guided Norwich City to a promotion-winning campaign in the 2014-15 season is currently making waves at Preston North End in the Championship.
He guided Preston to a 7th place finish in the Championship last season, transforming the club from a mid-table outfit to promotion hopefuls.
Preston have looked really impressive under his stewardship this term as well, with Neil bringing about a change at the club with his high-pressing and counter-attacking philosophy.

Neil’s faith in aggressive football coupled with his experience of winning promotion with the Canaries should make him a bold choice for the Baggies.
