Why West Ham should not sell Sebastien Haller

According to the Daily Express, West Ham United are considering to sell club-record signing Sebastien Haller after just one season at the London Stadium.

Haller had earlier joined the Hammers last summer after a stellar season with Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt for a sum of £45million. However, the French finisher has had a disappointing outing so far and has failed to live up to the expectations since making his big-money move to England.

The 25-year-old striker has managed to score just seven times despite appearing in all of their 29 league games. This has now forced the East London side to offload their expensive player in order to cut costs and search for better options.

The report also suggests that West Ham could be tempted to sell Haller in a bid to fund the purchase of Michy Batshuayi, who is out to leave London rivals Chelsea this summer. The Blues, on the other hand, want £40million for Batshuayi, who has been a Hammers target for some time now.

Having spent money on as many as seven new signings including Haller last summer, West Ham are in need of financial aid to bolster their squad ahead of next season. Haller’s poor form in front of goal has affected manager David Moyes’ side drastically, with the Hammers currently fighting for their survival in the Premier League.

Lack of a consistent goalscorer has hurt the Hammers badly as they have managed just 35 goals from 29 league outings this term. This has seen the club slip to a lowly 16th in the league – just two spots ahead of the relegation zone. If the current trend continues, it will affect the side even more in the long run.

West Ham must reconsider their options before selling Haller

Despite Haller underperforming for the Hammers this season, he still remains their top goalscorer in the league. Veteran winger Robert Snodgrass, who has five to his name, is second in the list.

Though Haller has been far from impressive this season, it seems too early to judge his performances. Prior to his arrival in England, the Frenchman has been a star performer with all the sides that he has played with previously.

Haller, who spent two seasons with Frankfurt before joining the East London side, played a total of 77 matches, scoring an impressive 33 goals and assisting 19 times. He was also a star performer at former side FC Utrecht, where he racked up a massive 51 goals and 17 assists from a total of 98 matches across all competitions.

Despite his poor displays this season, Haller’s numbers in the past give a totally different story. A proven performer in the past, Haller is a consistent goal-scorer and there is no questioning his talent. Moreover, West Ham do not have many options in the striker’s department.

They just have Swiss man Albian Ajeti as a backup. However, he has been far from impressive and is yet to score a goal for the Hammers. Hence, West Ham should really reconsider their options before selling their main man Haller. It would clearly put them in a spot of bother if they let go of their established striker.

Verdict

West Ham currently have just two forwards in their mix. Hence, rather than selling him, West Ham must keep more faith in him and try strengthening the areas which really need improvement.
