According to a report from Football.London, West Ham are interested in signing free agent Danny Welbeck in the summer transfer window.
The Englishman, 28, joined Arsenal from Manchester United back in 2014, but he has struggled with injuries during his time at the Emirates Stadium. He has made only 14 appearances under Unai Emery, who after the 1-1 draw with Brighton confirmed the forward will leave the club after the Europa League final.
Danny Welbeck has recovered from the knee injury he sustained earlier this season and as Arsenal aren’t extending his contract, West Ham must do everything possible to sign him up in the summer.
Manuel Pellegrini’s first season at West Ham didn’t go according to the plan; however, after a disastrous start to the campaign, the tenth-placed finish can be seen as an achievement. The Chilean manager will look to climb up the table next term and expect consistency from his players. Also, he needs to add more quality to his squad if the Hammers are to qualify for Europe.
The West Ham manager wants to revamp his strike force, as Andy Carroll is set to leave the club following the expiry of his contract next month, while the futures of Javier Hernandez and Lucas Perez remain uncertain. It’s important the Hammers sign a forward to compete with Marko Arnautovic, as well as add depth to the squad.
Welbeck has been unlucky over the last few seasons as several injuries have resulted in him not getting enough time on the pitch. But when fit, he is such an asset to have in the squad. He is neither a prolific goalscorer by any means, nor can guarantee a team 30-35 games a season due to his injury problems, but he is an excellent player to have as a back-up.
The 28-year-old is quick and useful for counter-attacking football, while he also possesses the work-rate that suits the kind of football that Pellegrini plays at West Ham. Welbeck can play in different attacking positions which adds more value to his name. Furthermore, he’ll give a different flavour to the Hammers’ attack, whilst being a top player to have from the bench for Pellegrini.
Despite his injury problems, the matter of fact is that Welbeck could be a smart addition for West Ham. He is a risk worth taking as far as the Londoners are concerned.

The Englishman’s pace, agility, work-rate and experience can make him a valuable player at the London Stadium, provided Pellegrini can keep him away from injuries.
