West Ham Opinion: Why the Hammers should sign Irfan Kahveci?

According to a Turkish show, Kırmızı Çizgi, Istanbul Basaksehir midfielder Irfan Kahveci could leave the Turkish Super Lig for an English club at the end of this campaign. (h/t Sports Witness)

West Ham are linked with a move for the Turkish midfielder, who has played 28 league games for Istanbul Basaksehir this season, scoring 4 goals and providing 5 assists.

The 23-year-old is under contract at Basaksehir until June 2021, meaning the Hammers have to spend a significant amount of money to sign him in the summer. And they must definitely do so after enduring an inconsistent 2018/19 Premier League campaign.

West Ham have a chance to finish in the top 10 if they manage to beat Watford in the final game of the season at the weekend. With just a game left to play this season, Manuel Pellegrini should start looking at additions to his squad for next season.

One area where the Londoners would potentially be light is in central midfield. Declan Rice has been an ever-present figure in Pellegrini’s team this season, impressing with his ball-winning, energy and work-rate in the middle of the park. But his performances haven’t gone unnoticed, with Manchester United keen in acquiring his services.

Other than Rice, Noble has been a regular fixture under Pellegrini; however, he is set to turn 32 later this month. With Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez’s injury woes coupled with Pedro Obiang’s inconsistency, West Ham could really do with a top-quality midfielder and Irfan Kahveci fits the bill perfectly.

Kahveci has enjoyed a solid season in Turkey, influencing games for Basaksehir with his all-action displays in midfield. He has represented his country at various youth levels and has earned six international caps for the Turkish national team thus far.

The 23-year-old has good pace and uses his exquisite dribbling skills to outsmart defenders. Kahveci’s passing range, skill-set and off the ball movement, combined with his ability to drive into the opposition box should make him a massive threat to any team in the world. Despite being left-footed, he is unpredictable, which makes him a tricky customer for his opposition marker.

The six-cap Turkey international has the strength to hold up the ball before eluding defenders with a quick turn, or by sliding a brilliant pass through on goal. Truly, he has the qualities to flourish in Pellegrini’s system at the London Stadium.

Verdict

The potential acquisition of Kahveci will undoubtedly improve Pellegrini’s midfield options at West Ham. Not only will he add more quality to the Hammers midfield, but could also help them compete for Europe next season.
