What is a Boneyard Match in WWE? AJ Styles challenges Undertaker at WrestleMania 36 to gimmick match

This week’s Raw saw AJ Styles challenge The Undertaker to a Boneyard Match at WrestleMania 36

AJ Styles vs The Undertaker could be one of the biggest stories at WWE WrestleMania 36.

The veteran targeted Styles in a couple of PPVs and cost the Phenomenal One the Tuwaiq trophy too.

However, Styles was not going to take this lying down and challenged Taker for a match at WrestleMania.

The Phenomenal one even targeted Taker’s wife, Michelle McCool, and that seems to have enraged the Deadman.

However, things took an interesting turn on this week’s Raw. Styles wants to face the Phenom at the grandest stage of them all, in a Boneyard Match.

The big question is what is a Boneyard match? WWE has never had a match with that name or gimmick, but they might have shared an insight of what to expect.

An old gimmick match returns?

During the Attitude Era and even a little after that, Taker and Kane were often involved in casket matches.

That meant that one wrestler had to be incapacitated enough to be put in a casket near ringside. The opponent would have to then shut the casket down to win the clash.

The other option was the Buried Alive match, something that WWE hinted towards.

This match would often take place near a burial ground and the wrestler would have to be put in a grave and then dirt/mud would be thrown over him, like a normal burial.

Some of those matches were shifted inside the stadium with the dirt mountain away from the ring.

Burying your opponent often meant the use of large machines to drop hundreds of pounds of dirt in the grave too.

However, this still poses a problem with this year’s WrestleMania. The match will take place at the Performance Center and it is doubtful that a large amount of dirt/mud can be used in the empty arena.

Any other options for the Boneyard match?

Since the match could be in the arena and not outdoors due to the coronavirus pandemic, WWE could make this a No DQ match and some of the weapons could be bones.

That sounds a bit weird but WWE has used a slew of crazy weapons in the past, and it would fit into the macabre world of the Undertaker.

Of course, the match should be a No DQ one given the condition Taker has been over the years.

He doesn’t seem set for long gruelling matches anyone, and that is understandable, given the work he has put out in years and his age.

However, the Boneyard Match is an interesting concept that can be explored. Hopefully, we learn more about the match and Taker can shine again at WrestleMania.
