In the digital age, social conventions and terminology related to relationships keep evolving. A new term has emerged for the phenomenon of interacting with someone after a break: “getting zombied.” Singer-songwriter Mariel Darling recently popularized the term on TikTok, where she shared her experience with this toxic dating trend.
Ghosting, also known as simmering or icing, is an abrupt end of every contact and communication with a person without giving a reason. In the early 2000s, the phrase was first used to describe dating and romantic relationships, but it has subsequently come to apply to abandonment in many kinds of relationships. In a recent dating trend known as “Zombied,” a person reappears on social media after going missing for a long period in an effort to revive a long-dead relationship.
Dating specialists claim that although the phrase is new, this behaviour has always existed. Dating expert Samantha Jayne cautions about being zombied because the person has no responsibility for their unexpected return, which can be nasty and leave you feeling confused. Nevertheless, individuals in online discussions seem intrigued by the new term, sharing their own experiences of being zombied.
Getting ghosted or zombied is a painful experience that can leave one feeling invalidated and ignored. Experts suggest leaving the zombie where they are and not letting them back into your life, as you deserve better. However, if you get zombied in a situation that was beyond your control, it’s okay to move on and never look back.
Before replying to a zombie, take some time to process your emotions and think about the situation. Don’t rush into replying, as it may make them think you were waiting for their text. If you’re hoping to rekindle things, find out their intentions before giving them another chance.
Be cautious of red flags, like them only texting you late at night or when they need something. Don’t tolerate such behaviour, as it shows that you’ll let them come in and out of your life as they, please. If they seem apologetic and sincere about ghosting you, it’s okay to try and rekindle things but make sure to address what happened in the first place. Remember, you deserve someone who makes you a priority.
