Linda Fruhvirtova defeated third seed Magda Linette 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to win the Chennai Open WTA 250 title – here is everything you should know about her nationality.
Linda Fruhvirtova registered one of the most memorable victories of her career at the Chennai Open. The world no. 74 was quite the underdog in the final but put up a strong display to cause a major upset against third seed Magda Linette. It is Fruhvirtova’s maiden singles title on the WTA tour and it also helped her achieve her career-best WTA rankings till date.
Fruhvirtova is a Czech national and was born in the country’s capital city of Prague in 2005. Although born and brought up in Czech Republic, Fruhvirtova has been training at the Mouratoglou Academy in Southern France since 2017. At 17 years and 141 days old, Fruhvirtova is the youngest WTA champion of the season so far.
How has Linda Fruhvirtova’s career been so far?
Linda Fruhvirtová made her WTA Tour main-draw debut at the 2020 Prague Open, receiving wildcard entries into the singles and doubles draws. In 2021, Linda at only 15, was the youngest player in the top 400 of the WTA rankings. She was taking good strides in 2021 but 2022 has turned out to be the breakthrough year of her career.
At the Miami Open earlier this year, she defeated Danka Kovinić for her first WTA 1000-level victory. In the second round, she recorded the biggest victory of her career, defeating 20th seed and world No. 24, Elise Mertens, for her first victory over a top 25 opponent. She then recorded her first victory over a top 20 opponent, defeating former world No. 1, Victoria Azarenka, which secured her a debut in the top 200 after the tournament.
All of these milestones to go with her maiden WTA title at the Chennai Open certainly puts her up for reckoning among the cream of the next generation stars.
