Roger Federer is a record 20-time Grand Slam winner and also has his own foundation
One of the most famous athletes on the planet, Roger Federer is known for his off-court activities as much as his on-court achievements, such as the Roger Federer Foundation.
It’s no secret that Federer has been an exponent of charity works since early in his career. The winner of a record 20 Grand Slam titles once when asked what his greatest ever achievement was, gave the following reply:
“I’m very proud of my foundation that’s been running for 15 years and we’ve had an impact on one million children. Giving them a better quality of education.”
With champion tennis star having made such a statement, let us now take a closer look at his foundation – the Roger Federer Foundation whose primary aim is to educate and enhance the life of children living in poverty.
Mission
“I am tomorrow’s future” reads the motto of the Roger Federation Foundation and there is a story behind it. Nolonwabo Batini, a 15-year-old girl from Ndzondelelo High School in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, made this self-confident discovery when Federer visited her school.
Her conviction became the vision and central theme of the Roger Federer Foundation. Their main aim involves enhancing the conditions of children living in poverty and give them a chance to actively shape their future.
What they do
The Roger Federer Foundation came into existence in 2004. The foundation’s primary duties involve supporting educational projects in the region of southern Africa and Switzerland. At the moment, it takes care of over one million kids.
They believe that education is the most powerful tool that could enhance the life of a person, and it is something that a child should receive early in their life. The foundation currently runs in African countries such as Botswana, Zambia, Namibia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. However, it is only based in Switzerland in Europe.
Board of trustees
Federer has involved the closest and dearest people in his life with the responsibility of running the institution. Roger Federer (President), Lynette Federer (mother), Mirka Vavrinec Federer (wife), Robbie Federer (father), Susanna Lemann (a Swiss Brazilian businessman), and Tony Godsick (agent) currently are the board of trustees.
Major milestone
The foundation’s greatest achievement happened in 2018. It crossed the bar of one million children benefiting from the programs promoted by Federer’s charitable activities.
These include exhibition matches like the ‘Match in Africa’ event which took place in Cape Town.
Rafael Nadal, billionaire Bill Gates and comedian Trevor Noah featured in the latest Match for Africa. The money collected from such exhibition matches goes towards the foundation’s works across the globe.
