TikTok is back with another trend and this time the viral product is Spa Water. Here is everything you should know about this controversy
TikTok is all about new trends coming one after the other which often get viral either due to entertainment or controversy. This time the viral product is Spa Water.
To make the Spa Water, TikTokers are mixing chunks of cucumber and fruit with some water, lime juice and sugar. Despite the popularity of the product people are raising eyebrows and are finding it controversial.
The Latinx community on TikTok are calling out people across the world for appropriating the drink which is a Mexican drink called Agua Fresca. However, the Mexican community on TikTok are complaining that influencers aren’t giving credit where it is due for the drink.
A few days back it was TikTok’s pink sauce and now it’s the Spa Water. This product was brought onto the platform by influencer Gracie Norton who says that it supposedly has many benefits like hydration and anti-inflammatory properties.
This drink is a Mexican drink which means cool water in Spanish. Latinx people on TikTok are accusing people from across the world of refurbishing the actual Mexican Agua Fresca.
Here are some of the reactions on Twitter regarding the TikTok version of the drink
One user tweeted with all frustration and said,
Another user when one step ahead and even called Gracie on TikTok and said
“This is the difference between cultural appropriation and appreciation. If you want to appreciate this culture, share it, share where it came from, and call it by its name. Don’t give it the white name that you decided it feels like you should put on it. Give credit where credit is due.”
The used posted a video reaction saying,
“They’re calling it ‘spa water.’ Do you know what I think of when I think of spa water? I think of… a bathtub of dirty a**, sweaty water.”
However, due to all the controversy surrounding the drink, Gracie deleted her video and due to all the backlash, her account was also banned on TikTok.
Gracie even took to Instagram and issued an apology, This is what she wrote,
“Recently I filmed a spa water series, which I titled incorrectly. The proper name for this drink is Agua Fresca, and the origin belongs to the Latin community. A majority of my content is about celebrating the many ways we can show our bodies love through trying new recipes, and I am aware that it is my responsibility to continue to educate myself on the origin of those recipes. I sincerely apologize to the Latin community and those of you that I have offended.”
Gracie Norton is just 24 years old and is based in Indiana. She is a brand manager for startups and is oriented toward promoting healthy food and lifestyles.
Her TikTok account had 549K followers and 5.8M likes on her videos.
